Barnsley 'Street Pastors'

After much prayer, planning and thought, on the 16th September 2009 “Christians Together in Barnsley”, signed the licence agreements to start “Barnsley Street Pastors”.

Firstly the Management Team met with officials from the local police and council, who were delighted in the project. We were offered a great deal of support from both, they were so excited, and questions were asked like 'Can you start by Christmas?' Of course we couldn’t; but we have begun recruiting, interviewing and will be training volunteers very soon. A presentation on Street Pastors was warmly received by all the Church leaders, which resulted in a signing of the licence agreements.

The bi-annual Forum for Methodist Evangelists at Cliff College on 22nd October featured the work and ministry of Street Pastors. The main seminar was led by the Rev Les Isaac, director of the Ascension Trust, which has set up over 60 street pastor schemes across the country. That day was very interesting; it is good to be in front of the ball game here in Barnsley, not lagging behind.

A Street Pastor

Street Pastors In Action
Street Pastors now operate on the streets of Barnsley every Saturday, and some Fridays, also at Bank Holiday weekends.
As more Pastors are trained, it is hoped to cover more nights.  They can offer help and support to clubbers and people on a 'night out' in town who may find themselves in some kind of trouble. The Pastors can supply limited first-aid assistance, carry bottles of water for rehydration, and also carry flip-flops for ladies who have trouble walking in (such as) high heels.  The Pastors can also call on taxis to get people home, or ambulances for the injured or ill. The Street Pastors are supported by a team of Prayer Pastors back at base, who are in radio/telephone contact with those on the streets.
